POSITION PURPOSE
A shop hourly position with the primary responsibilities directing the activities of the PVC personnel to accomplish both daily production goals and long term projects as assigned by the Team Leader. As a fully engaged leader, the Shift Leader takes ownership for the execution of the department’s strategy and goals, and demonstrates BAC’s values of Earning Trust, Embracing Responsibility, Showing Courage, and Driving Innovation. Ensures all team members are properly trained and performing according to BAC’s safety, production, and quality standards and guidelines. Promote open communication and ensure all necessary information and clarification are provided to employees in a timely manner. The purpose for every position at BAC regardless of department or level can be summed up as doing the right thing in the right way.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Owns personal and team safety. Observes all safety rules and uses the proper safety equipment at all times.
- Continually evaluate and develop new ways to improve the department.
- Back-up Team Lead as required.
- Delegates assignments to the appropriate person based on skill set and accountabilities.
- Train and develop junior team members to achieve technical and professional expertise.
- Ensure open and clear communication to department employees
- Meet or exceed dept. productivity through delegation and proactive flexing of labor.
- Work with employees as assigned to guide them on the completion of objectives
- Assist the Team Lead in completion of quarterly objectives and yearly reviews.
- Understand the ISO procedures of all related operations and document any changes.
- Help recommend, develop and justify new equipment and layouts with the intention to improve the departmental performance on productivity, safety and quality.
- Assist with the completion of ongoing training for all employees in the following areas: safety, quality / ISO procedures, production goals and equipment cross training.
- Assist with the completion of detailed accident investigation reports for all accidents, which occur, in PVC on assigned shift.
- Mentors and drives LEAN principles in the area.
- Support a passion for safety and drive departmental safety initiatives.
- Drive Safety Culture through active identification and follow-up of potential hazards and prompt investigation of incidents.
- Aggressively uphold and support quality and process standards
- Practice and sustain 5’s methodology.
- Provide coverage to alternative shifts when needed in support of the operation.
- Counsel and coach employees who fail to meet quality, safety, or productivity standards.
- Ensure team embraces sustainability, proactively reducing waste, energy and water usage.
- Support a culture of innovation through original thinking to improve processes, methods, systems or services; translates new ideas into business opportunities.
- Perform other duties as requested, directed and assigned.
NATURE & SCOPE
Reports to the Team Leader or Supervisor for the PVC department. The Shift Leader is a part of the department leadership team and shares responsibility for the department goals and objectives. In the absence of the Team Leader, the Shift Leader will be responsible for running the department. Additionally, the Shift Leader may participate on cross functional and regional teams.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Demonstrated supervisory/management skills including leading, delegation, and follow-up
- Ability to work independently and exhibits sound judgment.
- Ability to lead small groups.
- Ability to mentor and train junior team members.
- Proficiency preferred in the total operation of all two Thermoforming Machines including, but not limited to: indexing, shear cutting, air & vacuum systems, heat control, proper packaging and labeling, final products and be able to check correctness and quality of parts.
- Proficiency preferred in all secondary operations inclusive of requirements for a junior to senior team member.
- Working command of the English language, both written and spoken.
- Effective written communication including documentation of processes, and the communication of those processes with fellow team members. Ability to communicate to supervisors and co-workers with written memos or emails that are professional, concise and clearly understood.
- Demonstrated oral communication skills including the ability to communicate professionally with BAC customer and co-workers. The ability to share information verbally that is clearly understood and technically accurate.
- Competence in speaking in front of groups and giving presentations
- Demonstrate strong skills in initiative, problem solving, and working in a “team” environment.
- Working knowledge of computers including work processing, spreadsheets and databases, i.e., Word, Excel, PeopleSoft, Internet, and ADI.
- High level of product knowledge of BAC’s numerous models and parts.
- Competency with MS Excel including updating data and generating metrics in pre-formatted spreadsheets.
- Understands and adheres to LEAN principles in the area.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety.
- Familiar with all appropriate procedures, policies, and instructions of ISO for area of assignment to ensure quality.
- Ability to generate metrics
- Ability to interact with engineers, provide technical information as requested, and generate engineering change requests
WORKING CONDITIONS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk up to 80% of the time. Employee will also be required to bend, stoop, kneel, squat, sit and reach on a regular basis during a normal working shift. This position requires frequent lifting up to 50 pounds. Exposures include elevated noise levels associated with a manufacturing environment, fluctuations in temperature ambient conditions as well as intermittent exposure to the weather in and about the yard and dock areas. Occasional weekend work is typical and availability is expected for any of the three operating shifts.
