Plumbing Instructor

improve? At Summers, our mission is to provide safety and comfort to our customers. We constantly

drive to improve so that we can better serve our communities. We're hiring a Plumbing Instructor for

our Career Learning Center to ensure that our plumbers are the best in the business. It all starts with

new apprentices. Your primary responsibility will be to build and deliver basic plumbing training to

new hires for all of our locations. But it doesn't end there. Constant improvement means that you will

also be very involved in ongoing continuing education for all employees in the plumbing department.

We truly believe in lifelong learning, and you'll own making that happen.

This job is 90% in the classroom and training lab, with occasional trips into the field to provide extra

training to individuals. In general, you will not be working in customer homes, the job is Monday

through Friday, off by 4:30, and you will never be on call.

Job Responsibilities

  • Deliver basic training at the Summers Career Learning Center to newly hired apprentice

plumbers that will help them integrate into the field efficiently and effectively

  • Perform periodic skills assessments with all plumbers to understand training needs and

opportunities

  • Work directly with the Director of Training and Instructional Designer to build effective

offerings that bridge those gaps

  • Conduct one-on-one and small group training sessions in both lecture and hands-on lab

environments for a variety of basic and advanced topics

  • Construct training stations as needed
  • Work directly with plumbing managers and supervisors to assist them, indirectly or directly,

with improving ongoing training in the field

  • Represent Summers professionally, honestly, and ethically in all business matters and

activities. Model behavior for new employees

  • Demonstrate leadership to field employees at all levels
  • Perform ongoing skills assessments with apprentice plumbers to understand skill gaps

between existing state-mandated training and Summers' needs

  • Present to high school and other early-adult groups as needed

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Licensed plumber in the state of Indiana. Willingness to investigate licensing requirements in

surrounding states

  • 5+ years residential plumbing experience, including installation and service experience with

the 3 or more of the following: drains and drain cleaning, hot water systems (tank and

tankless), water softener systems, fixtures, valve replacements, water appliance connections,

and re-piping. Desire to master the others and become a generalist

  • Knowledge of all state and local codes for Indiana. Willingness to investigate code

requirements in surrounding states

  • Understanding and ability to explain basic electricity concepts and gas piping
  • Knowledge of math appropriate for plumbers and willingness to work with Director on math

skills assessments and instruction

  • Mastery of basic plumbing tools and usage, including soldering and ProPress
  • Demonstrated ability to teach adults and strong desire to learn more about training and

education

  • Effective time management and organizational skills
  • Basic computer knowledge. Does not need to be an expert at specific software programs, but

must not be technology-averse

  • Effective communicator with students, managers, and team with desire to continually improve
  • Must demonstrate safe working practice
  • Able to occasionally lift and maneuver equipment up to 75 lbs
  • Able to crawl, climb, kneel, squat, bend, and reach overhead
