Painter

Our Opportunity

As the Painter you are responsible for the application of finishes using HVLP, airless, and various other spray equipment by routinely achieving production goals in a fast paced production environment in the Paint Department. You will have extensive knowledge of the technical data of all products used in the Paint Department with a focus on application, chemical makeup, and hazard recognition. You will have a strong background in color theory with a focus on creating and matching custom colors.

You will have a strong working knowledge of substrates commonly used by the fabrication teams with a focus on prep methods required to achieve desired finishes. You are proficient in the spraying of various filters and primers with a focus on adequate buildup and coverage dedicated by prep methods. You will possess the ability to troubleshoot and overcome challenges posed by either the spray equipment or materials used during the finishing process.

You are quality focused, avoiding errors that require reworks due to paint defects.

You will be successful if you possess the following knowledge and abilities:

Quality control

  • Thorough knowledge of accepted quality standards and possess the ability to determine whether properties successfully meet them prior to release from the paint department.
  • Able to perform minor touch ups out in the production floor and in the paint shop, when possible, to avoid complete repaints of properties.
  • Skilled at wet sanding and buffing with a focus on correcting blemishes on high gloss finishes and achieving a polished look on various substrates.
  • Able to identify and anticipate defects in the finish by having a working knowledge of the different stages of the finishing process.

Organization

  • Able to identify different jobs and their requirements based on clients, job numbers, and other information provided in the Shop Write Up with a focus on completion dates and estimated hours.
  • Keep detailed records of materials and supplies used for each job while making sure they are charged out to the correct job number.
  • Able to create and adjust client specific custom color formulas and record them in the paint mixing software for reference and future use.

Daily operations

  • Monitor and communicate inventory levels on paints and materials to avoid production gaps.
  • Clean and maintain all spray equipment in excellent working condition.
  • Stock and organize paint counters, fire-proof cabinets, and paint mixing areas.
  • Mix paints needed for jobs with a focus on applying all identifying labels to containers.
  • Maintain spray booths clean and functional by scheduling and performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting common malfunctions, and monitoring for performance.

Safety and environmental standards

  • Have a working knowledge of the PPE required to safely complete each stage of the finishing process.
  • Be able to locate, read, and implement information on the coatings' product data sheets.
  • Have a working knowledge of GHS labeling requirements and be able to understand and convey the information associated with each pictogram.
  • Be cognizant of and be able to implement OSHA guidelines that apply to the paint department.
  • Be cognizant of and be able to implement GPJ workplace safety guidelines and emergency procedures.
  • Have a working knowledge of the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous and flammable materials in the paint department.

Personnel development

  • Be able to instruct, direct, and mentor newer team members on production methods and departmental guidelines.
  • Participate in, suggest, or develop training courses, internal and external, that will expand on current skills and knowledge.
  • Acknowledge and evaluate feedback from management and department peers to identify individual strengths and growth opportunities.

Procedures development

  • Work closely with department leaders in researching, testing, and evaluating new products and finishing techniques to both refine current capabilities and develop new ones.
  • Be able to establish and suggest alternate approaches for achieving desired finishes while staying within operating guidelines.
