VARIETY MANAGER
PURPOSE STATEMENT: To manage the Variety Department to achieve maximum sales and profit.
SIGNIFICANT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To greet customers, respond to customer questions/requests/complaints and explain store policies in a courteous manner.
- To orient/train all new variety department employees and retrain employees when necessary.
- To implement a weekly display plan for end-aisle merchandising and ad promotion.
- To order all variety products, specialty foods and supplies so as to eliminate out-of-stocks while maintaining the desired variety turns.
- To perform: 1) preparation for receipt of merchandise; 2) checking of each item in the totes; 3) sorting of totes according to aisle or location of product for stocking; 4) stocking of merchandise on shelf/peg/strip/rack according to plan-o-gram; 5) building of displays.
- To safely use cleaning equipment and chemicals.
- To perform: 1) loading of stocking carts; 2) transportation of totes to the sales floor on stocking carts; 3) matching of the case-strip to the shelf tag/stock; 4) sticker-price items with non-removable labels; 5) rotate stock; 6) place merchandise in the designated shelf/display position/area; 7) the "face/front" program for the front row of each display; 8) the immediate pick up/removal of all broken containers, packing materials/boxes from the sales floor or customers’ pathway.
- To perform the safety procedures used in the operation of the baler, case cutter, pallet jack, and stocking cart.
- To perform the counting and recording of individual items of merchandise for inventory.
- To perform the manual price-marking/labeling of merchandise without a UPC code.
- To supervise the movement of damaged/unsalable and "returnable" products from shelves to the backroom, sorting of the materials into bins and the return of damage to vendors.
- To perform the changing of signs, tags and price markers.
- To perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by the store manager, substituting for absent workers and performing any additional tasks necessary to provide products and services to customers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
- Able to give/receive complex verbal instructions/descriptions to/from supervisors/co-workers/employees concerning store/department policy/procedures and use of equipment.
- The ability to read and write English. Able to read instructions, tote stickers, merchandise labels, warehouse order-codes, numbers, reports, printed paper and forms.
- Make judgments concerning: the placement of merchandise on the shelf/display, pricing, employee scheduling, order of product/supplies, department conditions, hiring/supervision of employees, merchandising plans, department’s operational policies and procedures and the sales/promotion of merchandise.
- Good interpersonal communications.
PREFERRED:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior Variety Department experience.
- Prior experience in implementing HBC/GM planograms.
TASKS OF THE JOB – This position generally involves:
- Mobility:
- Move while conducting training and orientation of HBC/GM Department personnel, approximately 50 yards.
- Move to supervise: the receiving of product, movement of product to the floor or storage area, opening/cutting of cases, inspect product for damage, sorting of cases/merchandise, building of displays on the shelf and at end-aisles, the allocation of space in HBC/GM categories, order merchandise and supplies, cleaning and maintenance, removal of trash/debris from the department, price-marking and signage throughout the department, maximum approximate 100 yards.
- Work on tile or concrete for a maximum of 8 hours in duration.
- Lift and stack empty totes from floor to 72 inches overhead.
- Lift a maximum of 45 lbs. from 6 inches to 48 inches.
- Lift a maximum of 45 lbs. from 6 inches to 84 inches on to overhead/backroom storage rack.
- Carry a maximum of 45 lbs. up to 15 feet.
- Pick up/move/sort/open/"face/front" case/item/trash/from floor/shelf/ground/pallet/rack storage.
- Attain merchandise/cases on the top of overhead/backroom storage shelves/rack, up to 84 inches from the floor.
- Reach forward/down/up to 36 inches to attain merchandise on stocking cart or pallets, to place cases/items on shelving/displays, clean shelves/floor area or control maintenance/stocking equipment.
- Reach up to place signs and banners in place.
- Handle labels/signs/tags, case-cutter/utility knife and cardboard/packaging and debris.
- Grasp and handle crushable/metal/paper/plastic store products.
- Operate cash register keys and handle cash and coins.
- Twist at the waist while cleaning, cutting/opening, sorting, stocking, loading/unloading, moving/removing merchandise, and stocking merchandise.
- Climb on ladders, cases, shelving and stairs up to 10 feet in height.
- Stock shelves 8 inches from the floor to 36 inches in height.
- See cases, case-cutter edge, case strips, shelf location, product size/description/quality, customers, totes, shelf tags, labels on products, stocking carts, knives, packaging materials, debris on floor, aisle markers, and signs.
- Perceive color difference on product and product labels.
- Listen to customer, vendor and co-worker questions and responses.
- Listen to the sound of baler/pallet jack/cleaning-equipment operation.
- Use and respond to the intercom/phone system.
- Read case labels/case strips, signs, tags, equipment and chemical-warning labels, shelf signs, numbers and aisle markers, department forms and reports.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Inside and outside work with extreme variations in heat/cold/dust/ humidity.
