About the role
Karmak is hiring a Director of Finance to lead accounting, reporting, treasury, tax, and forecasting, reporting directly to the CFO.
Karmak is an employee-owned, fully remote software company. We build dealer management software for the heavy-duty truck industry. Our platforms, Fusion and Blaze, run parts, service, and accounting operations for truck dealers.
Position Summary
This is a hands-on leadership role. You will own the close, the audit, and our employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) and retirement plan compliance, and you will run the company's forecasting and budgeting. You will lead one direct report, a Senior Accounting Manager, and through her the accounting team. The role has a clear path to VP of Finance for the right person.
What You'll Do
Accounting, close, and audit
- Hold overall responsibility for the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close and the financial statements; the Senior Accounting Manager runs the day-to-day accounting functions.
- Lead the annual external audit from planning through issued statements.
- Apply technical accounting for a SaaS business, including ASC 606 revenue recognition, ASC 340-40 contract costs, and ASC 842 leases.
- Maintain internal controls, segregation of duties, and written procedures for every recurring process.
Forecasting and planning
- Build and run the monthly revenue, operating, and rolling cash flow forecasts.
- Lead the annual budget with department heads.
- Maintain the long-range financial model and run scenarios for pricing, headcount, and investment decisions.
- Report SaaS metrics and budget-vs-actual results with clear explanations of what drove them.
ESOP and retirement plans
- Coordinate the annual ESOP valuation, census, allocations, diversification, and distributions with the trustee, recordkeeper, and valuation firm.
- Manage 401(k) nondiscrimination testing and Form 5500 filings for both plans.
- Answer plan questions from participants and support benefits renewals with HR.
Treasury, tax, and compliance
- Manage daily cash, banking relationships, investment portfolio oversight, and debt covenant compliance.
- Coordinate federal and state S-corporation tax filings with outside advisors, including R&D capitalization, excise, and sales and use tax.
- Support insurance renewals, subsidiary filings, and contract tracking.
Leadership and partnership
- Lead and develop the Senior Accounting Manager and the accounting team.
- Partner with Sales, Product, and Services leaders on pricing, deal economics, and budgets.
- Support acquisitions with diligence, modeling, and integration.
- Prepare Board financial materials and build working relationships with the Board, auditors, and lenders.
What You'll Bring
Required
- 10+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including at least 3 years as a Controller or Director of Finance.
- Hands-on ownership of a monthly close, an external audit, and debt covenant compliance.
- Working knowledge of ASC 606 and ASC 340-40, ideally in software or SaaS.
- Has built and run a driver-based forecast and annual budget, not only reported actuals.
- Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills; experience with an FP&A platform.
- Has managed and developed people.
- Communicates financial results clearly and credibly to executives, auditors, and lenders.
Preferred
- Experience in an ESOP-owned S-corporation: valuations, repurchase obligations, trustee coordination.
- Retirement plan compliance: 401(k) testing and Form 5500 filings.
- Multistate tax and Section 174 experience.
- Acquisition diligence and integration experience.
- Proficiency automating work with scripts or AI tools.
- MBA or equivalent strategic finance background.
How You'll Work
- You frame trade-offs and recommend a decision, not only the analysis.
- You explain numbers in plain terms to people outside finance.
- You understand how pricing, deals, and customer behavior show up in the financials.
- You develop people and delegate, so your own role can be backfilled internally.
- You see deadlines and risks coming and act before anyone asks.
Growth and why Karmak
This role is built to grow into VP of Finance within two to three years, based on results rather than tenure. You will work directly with the CFO and get to know the executive team and the Board early.
- Employee ownership: participation in the Karmak ESOP.
- A direct line to the CFO and real ownership of the company's financial operations.
- A stable, growing software business in an essential industry.
- Benefits: health, dental, vision, 401(k), and paid time off (HR to confirm details).
The above statements describe the general nature and level of work being performed in this job. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by Karmak.
