Petrography/Chemistry Technician

Job Summary

The Primary function of the Chemistry/Petrography Technician is to assist in the preparation and analysis of materials used in construction, including concrete, aggregates, and other building materials. You will work closely with senior chemists and petrographers to ensure precise preparation of samples for chemical analysis. Additionally, you will contribute to maintaining laboratory quality standards and operational efficiency.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Prepare construction material samples (concrete, aggregates, rock, etc.) for chemical and microscopic analysis, ensuring proper sectioning, crushing, sieving, and weighing.
Perform precise chemical testing, including sample preparation and equipment calibration.
Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure proper cleanliness of chemistry glassware and tools.
Support the senior chemistry team in conducting detailed chemical analyses on a variety of construction materials to determine properties and composition.
Learn and perform petrographic examination techniques under supervision.
Follow established protocols to conduct tests in accordance with AET’s quality standards and industry best practices.
Work collaboratively with the petrographic and chemistry teams to provide timely and accurate results to clients.
Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local safety regulations and AET’s internal health and safety policies.

Other Areas of Accountability

Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to improve laboratory processes and operational efficiency.
Actively maintain the quality of work, including accurate documentation and reporting of laboratory findings.
Keep updated on advances in chemistry and materials science relevant to construction materials.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required; an associate's or bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Geology, Earth Science, or a related field preferred.
Previous laboratory experience, particularly in chemical analysis or materials testing, is highly desirable.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to perform precise sample preparation and testing.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong communication skills to collaborate with colleagues and clients.
Problem-solving skills and the ability to escalate issues to senior staff when needed.

Work Environment

This job primarily operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. This position will occasionally be required to operate in a field environment.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
