Clune Construction is an employee-owned general contractor headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1997 by Mike Clune, a second-generation builder, the company launched with a vision of building an environment that fosters and rewards everyone's achievements. What began as a single Chicago office grew steadily into a national powerhouse. Today, Clune operates eight offices across the United States — in Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. — with over 800 employee-owners managing an annual project portfolio exceeding $5 billion.
Clune Construction became employee-owned in 2012 when it implemented an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). Founder Mike Clune spearheaded the transition to ensure that the employees who had built the company's culture and driven its growth would become true stakeholders in its future — particularly as he began planning his eventual retirement from day-to-day operations. Under the ESOP, all eligible employees are automatically enrolled after one year of service at no cost to them, giving every employee-owner a direct financial stake in the company's performance and long-term success. Employee ownership reinforces Clune's foundational belief that its people are its greatest asset — a culture the company calls "The Clune Way," built on the core values of safety, service, teamwork, respect, excellence, leadership, and innovation. This ownership mindset extends beyond the workplace: Clune annually donates a portion of its profits to more than 100 charitable organizations and, in 2023, established the Clune Cares Foundation to further deepen its community impact nationwide.
