About being our Construction Inspector
As our Inspector, you observe and document the daily construction of various transportation and public works projects to verify compliance with approved plans, specifications, and codes while adhering to safety practices. Our Inspectors are team players and must understand client goals, establish and maintain effective client relationships, and help develop others on the team.
Our Inspectors work in the field at active project sites, therefore candidates must reside locally and/or be able to make the daily commute. You may observe and inspect a combination of civil, electrical, mechanical, and structural elements. We anticipate our Construction Inspector work an average of 8 to 10 months per year, depending on seasonal conditions and workload demands, which may consist of occasional night and weekend work.
Responsibility Highlights for our Construction Inspector
- Provide daily site inspection and observations to verify compliance with the approved plans, specifications, codes, and inform team of possible changed conditions
- Prepare and maintain daily reports, including taking photos and taking measurements, calculations, computation of quantities, and review the contractor's schedule progress
- Coordinate activities with clients/owners, consultants, contractors, designers, and regulatory agencies
- Coordinate field special inspections for material sampling and testing; coordinate with the contractor for planning and scheduling required inspections
- Review and provide input on potential change order issues, track and record disputed work, and/or change order work
- Support Labor Compliance efforts
- Verify field surveys
Minimum Qualifications to be our Construction Inspector
- High School diploma or equivalent education for general public works assignments; and an additional two years of education beyond high school is required to work on assignments for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans)
- 5 + years of relevant experience inspecting roadways, highways, transportation, or related public works projects
- Knowledge of the construction process and the ability to read, understand, and interpret construction plans, drawings, and specifications and ability to exercise independent judgement in day-to-day interpretation of standards and specifications
- Excellent verbal, written, and digital communication skills including fluency with Microsoft programs and construction management software
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment with minimal supervision and manage deadlines
- Ability to work on an active construction site, including walking over uneven terrain, climbing ladders, crawling, stooping and entering confined spaces, being outdoors in inclement weather, wearing proper safety equipment, and practicing industry safety protocols
Preferred Qualifications for our Construction Inspector
- Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline; Construction/Project Management certifications; and/or relevant certifications
- Demonstrated understanding of Caltrans and/or Local Agency standards, specifications, and construction manual
- Prior experience working on Caltrans projects
- Certification as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) in California
