We are searching for an exceptional Master Heavy Equipment Mechanic specializing in the heavy civil construction sector. This senior role requires expert-level proficiency in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of specialized equipment vital for grading, clearing, crushing, and utility operations (e.g., excavators, dozers, loaders, crushers, compactors, scrapers, and articulated trucks). The master mechanic will utilize advanced technical skills to ensure peak performance and reliability of our fleet in demanding field environments, minimize operational downtime, and provide high-level technical guidance and mentorship to our mechanical team.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Inspect and Diagnose Specialized Equipment: Conduct advanced diagnostics using computerized tools and physical inspection techniques to pinpoint complex issues across mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems specific to earthmoving machinery).
Repair and Overhaul: Perform extensive repairs, overhauls, and rebuilds on heavy civil construction equipment components, including high-horsepower diesel engines, E/H controls, hydrostatic drive systems, and specialized hydraulic pumps and motors.
Safety and Compliance: Strictly adhere to all company safety policies and regulatory requirements, including OSHA and MSHA standards, ensuring all equipment is maintained in a safe, compliant operational state.
Documentation and Reporting: Accurately document all work orders, parts usage, repair histories, and service intervals using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) specific to heavy equipment fleet management.
Mentorship and Leadership: Serve as a technical resource and subject matter expert, mentoring and training junior mechanics in best practices for maintaining civil construction equipment.
Required Qualifications and Skills
Education: A high school diploma or GED is required. A technical degree or vocational certification in heavy equipment mechanics or diesel technology is strongly preferred.
Experience: A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience specifically maintaining heavy construction machinery used for earthwork, trenching, and utility installation.
Certifications:
Valid driver's license: a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred but not necessary.
National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications (e.g., Medium-Heavy Truck or Off-Road Diesel credentials) are highly valued.
Manufacturer-specific training certifications for major civil construction brands (e.g., Caterpillar, John Deere, Komatsu, Volvo) are a significant advantage.
Technical Skills:
Expert knowledge of high-pressure hydraulic systems and E/H controls common in modern excavators and dozers.
Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing engine management systems, electronic controls, telematics and basic GPS/Grade Control technology (e.g., Trimble, Topcon).
Strong welding and mechanical fabrication abilities.
Ability to interpret complex hydraulic and electrical schematics accurately.
Soft Skills:
Superior problem-solving skills under pressure in field conditions.
Strong commitment to safety protocols in active construction zones.
Excellent communication skills for coordinating with site supervisors, operators, and the maintenance team.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Physical: The role demands a high level of physical fitness, requiring frequent standing, kneeling, crouching, bending, and the ability to lift and move heavy components up to 75 pounds.
Environment: This position is primarily located in our Newnan HQ with occasional trips to active construction sites with exposure to significant noise, dust, mud, vibration, extreme weather conditions, and moving heavy machinery. Use of all required personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory at all times.
