OVERVIEW OF JOB
Location: Batesville, Indiana
Position Summary
The Tooling Specialist at Wood-Mizer is a skilled manufacturing professional responsible for the fabrication, modification, repair, and maintenance of tooling, fixtures, and jigs that support production operations. This role utilizes manual machining, welding, and fabrication techniques to build and maintain tooling used throughout the manufacturing process. The Tooling Specialist works from prints, sketches, or concepts to produce precision components and tooling that enable efficient and reliable production.
This position requires strong hands-on mechanical aptitude, experience with manual machine tools, and the ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve tooling issues.
Key Responsibilities
Tooling Fabrication & Maintenance
- Fabricate, modify, and repair production tooling, fixtures, and jigs used in manufacturing operations.
- Maintain and service existing tooling to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable production performance.
- Diagnose tooling issues and implement corrective actions to restore functionality.
Manual Machining
- Set up and operate manual milling machines, lathes, grinders, and other shop equipment to manufacture tooling components.
- Machine parts to precise tolerances using appropriate measuring instruments and inspection methods.
- Interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches to produce accurate components.
Fixture & Jig Development
- Design, build, and modify manufacturing fixtures and jigs to support production processes.
- Develop practical tooling solutions to improve efficiency, repeatability, and quality in manufacturing operations.
- Create basic designs or layouts for tooling concepts when detailed prints are not available.
Fabrication & Welding
- Perform welding and fabrication tasks required to construct or repair tooling and fixtures.
- Modify structural elements of fixtures and tooling as needed to support production requirements.
Tooling Support
- Work closely with production teams to address tooling-related challenges.
- Provide technical support related to tooling setup, adjustments, and maintenance.
- Maintain organized tooling documentation and ensure proper care and storage of tooling.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical or vocational training in machining or manufacturing preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in machining, tooling, tool & die, or related manufacturing environment.
- Experience operating manual machine tools such as mills and lathes.
- Experience fabricating or maintaining tooling, fixtures, and jigs.
- Welding and fabrication experience.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and blueprints.
- Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing or modifying tooling concepts from sketches or ideas.
- Experience working in a manufacturing production environment.
- Familiarity with CAD software for tooling design (preferred but not required).
