Overview
Civil & Environmental Consultants, Inc. (CEC) is seeking a Solid Waste Engineer (Project Manager) to join our growing team in Detroit, Michigan or Toledo, Ohio. This is an opportunity for an experienced engineer to lead landfill design and environmental infrastructure projects, working across permitting, design, and construction while supporting the continued growth of CEC’s solid waste practice in the region.
You’ll play a key role in managing projects, mentoring staff, and collaborating with clients and regulators, while continuing to apply your technical expertise in a specialized and evolving field.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the planning, design, and delivery of landfill and solid waste infrastructure projects
- Prepare and review permit applications, technical reports, and engineering documentation
- Perform and oversee engineering analyses including airspace evaluations, soil balance, slope stability, settlement, and stormwater management
- Lead the design of landfill systems, including liner systems, leachate collection, stormwater systems, and landfill gas collection systems
- Manage Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) projects for landfill cell construction, caps, and environmental control systems
- Coordinate with regulatory agencies and support permitting and compliance efforts
- Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables to ensure successful project execution
- Mentor and guide junior engineers and technical staff
- Collaborate with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Environmental Engineering
- 5+ years of experience in civil, geotechnical, or solid waste engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Michigan or Ohio required
- Experience with landfill design, environmental systems, or geotechnical engineering
- Strong understanding of permitting and regulatory processes
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar design software
- Experience with modeling tools such as HELP, HydroCAD, Slide, or similar is a plus
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with clients and regulatory agencies
