Position Summary:

Responsible for planning and directing the deli and bakery merchandising and procurement programs and developing the strategic vision and goals for the department. The Director plans and leads the development of merchandising assortment, buying programs, in-store presentations, pricing strategies, and promotions, which will achieve targeted sales and profit.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Direct and manage all deli and bakery buying, pricing, and promotions, and develop and create advertising plans.
Develop and monitor financial budgets to achieve department sales and profit.
Create and implement retail programs for the categories and develop/monitor metrics to manage inventory, pricing, sales, and profitability.
Champion new ideas to drive customer satisfaction and increase sales.
Identify trends in the marketplace and implement initiatives that establish best-in-class departments.
Implement and manage deli/bakery retail pricing to include everyday pricing, temporary price reduction (TPR), and ad/promotional pricing.
Plan and coordinate sales promotion activities and oversee the preparation of merchandise displays.
Select and assign new merchandisers and analysts. Supervise, train, and assist them in performing daily operations for the department and retail store locations, delivering on customer service goals, merchandising plans, sales and profitability, pricing, and inventory management.
Schedule and assign work activities, monitor and review work performed, and provide technical support and assistance to department personnel.
Develop or approve and implement improvements in departmental practices and procedures, especially those aimed at efficiency, productivity, and profitability.
Ensure government regulations and standards are met, especially those pertaining to product offerings, safety, and sanitation.
Work with the Store Managers, finance, marketing, and other category directors to promote and facilitate organizational development and effectiveness.
Work with vendors, brokers, and third-party warehouse to monitor inventory, source products, monitor product availability, funding, and pricing.
Perform related responsibilities as required or assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Manage department personnel directly.

Merchandisers and Analyst

Education:

Associate or bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience).

Experience:

At least 5 years of related retail grocery experience
2 to 3 years of related supervisory experience

Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

Strong business analysis, including superior cognitive ability; able to simplify complex situations, make sound judgments, research and analyze data, understand P& L management, and budget development.
Strong merchandising, marketing, category management, and field operations background in a customer-driven environment with a proven track record of achieving solid financial results.
Strategic thinking. Anticipates future trends and consequences and creates competitive strategies and plans.
Business savvy. Build relationships and successfully navigate to influence change, build consensus, and get things done.
Demonstrated skill and proficiency in fostering and building a dynamic, team-oriented, results-driven department.
Strong negotiation skills and knowledge of the supplier community.
Advanced Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills and prior experience with category analyzer software.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
Standing/ walking up 100% of work hours.
Hand use: Grasping, manipulation, pushing and pulling. Work also may require bending, squatting and reaching.
Exposure to temperatures: Freezing (<32 degrees Fahrenheit), and warm temperatures (>90 degrees Fahrenheit). Ability to work in cold and wet environments.
