Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, Inc. is accepting applications for Archaeological Technicians for several projects located primarily in Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming though there may be some fieldwork in other states as well. Work for this position is expected to start with the field season in April or May. Archaeological Technicians perform field work and other tasks under the direction of a Project Director or Crew Chief, primarily conducting surveys, testing, and data recovery excavations. Laboratory and office tasks may also be assigned as necessary.

These are full-time, hourly positions. Projects may require extended field time, typically on a 9 days on, 5 days off schedule, although schedules will vary from project to project. Per-diem (typically $59 per day) and lodging are provided for all project work requiring overnight stays away from your home office. The pay rate will be $20 - $23 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. Hours worked in excess of 40 per week are paid at an overtime rate of time and a half.

Tasks

Assist in the surface inventory of project areas; this includes walking in rough terrain for multiple miles during the day, observing the ground surface and identifying archaeological materials. It also may include testing and excavation of recorded sites.
Participate in the recording and mapping of discoveries during surface inventories.
Document artifacts discovered during surveys, site testing, or site excavation using written descriptions, drawings, and photographs as necessary.
Record location and condition of artifacts using various field equipment.
Process collected artifacts in accordance with company policies and procedures.
Assist with preparations for fieldwork; this includes maintaining and preparing tools, equipment, vehicles, and supplies.
Drive a four-wheel drive vehicle legally and safely.
Operate field technology (such as GPS units, tablets, etc.).

Able to work outdoors for 10 or more hours a day in often very hot (90+°F) and very cold (32-°F) temperatures; other conditions include high winds, extreme dust, and high altitude
Must be able to walk numerous miles in a work period, often in rugged terrain
Must be able to systematically excavate natural soil strata using hand tools, to include shovels and trowels
Must be able to dig, kneel, and crouch for extended periods of time
Able to lift at least 40 lbs. and maintain physical fitness adequate to tasks
Willing to spend several days at remote work locations during the field season

Requirements

B.A. in Anthropology or History (commensurate field experience will be accepted in lieu of a degree).
Field skills (site recording, mapping, artifact collection, excavation, etc.) meet or exceed company expectations for the position.
Completion of a university field school program is preferred, but not required, for this position.
