A Day in the Life of a Vice President and Deputy General Counsel
As a Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for Liberty Military Housing, you will be responsible for the provision of a wide range of legal services across the Liberty Military Housing (Liberty) portfolio, including but not limited to those related to resident relations, risk management, litigation, Liberty policy and legal compliance, and day-to-day business and real estate law counsel, consistent with Liberty’s mission statement and core values.
This position is based in San Diego, CA.
Responsibilities
Your Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
- Handles a wide variety of business and real estate law matters related to the Liberty’s Portfolio, including its property management business unit.
- Provides day-to-day legal support to Liberty’s national support offices and property management teams, to include advising on resident relations matters.
- Manages the legal aspects of risk management, to include supporting Liberty’s National Director of Risk Management as well as managing litigation matters and outside litigation counsel.
- Assists in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and systems that meet the strategic goals of Liberty and ensures compliance therewith.
- Responds to internal and external requests for information, including Freedom of Information Act requests, due diligence questionnaires, and answering general questions on a variety of topics as they arise.
- Advises on federal and state laws and regulations affecting Liberty and ensures compliance therewith.
- Provides legal support in connection with the interpretation and implementation of regulatory and legislative mandates.
- Maintains corporate compliance with all laws, legal agreements, and company policies and procedures as applicable.
- Performs any other duties as necessary or as assigned by the General Counsel.
Qualifications
What You Need for Success:
- Minimum ten (10) years of experience as in-house counsel or government counsel equivalent.
- Experience in providing legal advice to a large organization across a geographically diverse portfolio.
- Knowledge of Department of Defense (DoD) structure and operations and experience in providing legal advice concerning such matters.
- Proven success in legal, problem-solving, decision-making, multi-tasking, communication, and organizational skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external clients and external counsel.
- The ability to think critically while balancing business goals with prudent risk management.
- Have or be able to develop positive working relationships with government partner counsel.
- Ability to manage outside counsel and litigation matters.
- Excellent computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel and Outlook).
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary legal services.
- Ability to work proactively and independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree and state bar admittance required, master’s in law (LLM) degree in environmental or land use law preferred.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle and possess a valid driver’s license.
- Possess a DoD identification card or can obtain appropriate credentials for military base access.
- Ability to perform the essential job functions consistently and safely in accordance with ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
- Ability to travel to regional locations for work, training, meetings and other work-related activities.
- Position may require climbing stairs and ladders, walking and standing for long periods of time.
- The position requires mobility within the office; use of a computer and other office machinery such as a scanner and copy machine.
- Must be able to deal with a fast-paced, constantly changing work environment, including handling multiple tasks on a daily basis.
- May require use of personal vehicle.
- Ability to independently lift/carry supplies or equipment up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to work flexible hours and overnight travel as required and respond to emergency situations when necessary.
