POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Manufacturing Machining Project Leader is responsible for establishing and implementing the machining capabilities required for the successful startup and ongoing operation of a new BAC manufacturing facility. This role leads equipment and process readiness for sheet metal, coil, and other machining operations, ensuring equipment completes FWT and SAT requirements and operates to specification. The position partners with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, and equipment suppliers to deliver safe, capable, and repeatable manufacturing processes aligned with BAC standards.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Own operational readiness for the machining workstream by confirming equipment, processes, documentation, training, certification, and site leadership capability are in place prior to production launch.
- Lead machining workstream readiness for the greenfield plant from equipment definition and installation through startup, validation, production launch, and stabilization.
- Coordinate the implementation of sheet metal, coil, and related machining equipment and processes in alignment with the approved plant design, production requirements, and project schedule.
- Plan and execute FWT and SAT activities, document results, resolve open items, and confirm equipment operates safely and consistently to specification before production release.
- Develop machining process standards, operating parameters, setup requirements, tooling plans, control methods, and escalation procedures.
- Partner with Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, EHS, Operations, and suppliers to address equipment, process, safety, quality, and capacity risks that could affect startup readiness.
- Establish quality controls and process verification methods that support repeatability, traceability, and conformance to product and manufacturing requirements.
- Support equipment commissioning, process trials, capability validation, production ramp-up, and corrective action activities.
- Create and maintain standard operating procedures, work instructions, training materials, certification requirements, and other documentation needed for site execution.
- Train and certify site manufacturing leaders and team members to operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and sustain machining processes to established standards.
- Implement applicable BAC X standards and daily management practices, including tier boards, hour-by-hour monitoring, visual controls, standard work, and performance escalation.
- Track workstream milestones, risks, decisions, dependencies, and deliverables; communicate status and escalate barriers that may affect operational readiness.
- Transition ownership to the site team with clear documentation, trained resources, defined support processes, and confirmed readiness to sustain performance after launch
NATURE AND SCOPE:
This is a hands-on project leadership role supporting the design, build, commissioning, and startup of a greenfield manufacturing facility. The incumbent leads the machining workstream and coordinates cross-functional resources without necessarily having direct authority over all contributors. The role requires significant time in manufacturing and equipment installation environments, disciplined project execution, and the ability to move between technical problem solving, supplier coordination, documentation, and workforce training. Success is measured by safe and timely equipment startup, processes operating to specification, workforce certification, complete documentation, and a sustainable handoff to site leadership.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Operations, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in machining, fabrication, manufacturing engineering, manufacturing operations, or startup readiness activities within an industrial manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated experience launching or commissioning machining and fabrication equipment in a manufacturing environment; greenfield plant or major expansion experience strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of sheet metal, coil processing, tooling, equipment controls, process capability, and production readiness.
- Experience leading equipment acceptance, installation, commissioning, validation, and startup activities, including FWT and SAT.
- Strong knowledge of standard work, visual management, problem solving, process control, and continuous improvement principles.
- Ability to develop clear SOPs, work instructions, training materials, and certification standards.
- Proven project leadership skills, including planning, risk management, supplier coordination, issue resolution, and stakeholder communication.
- Ability to train and influence manufacturing leaders and frontline teams while reinforcing accountability to established standards.
- Strong communication, analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and project management tools; experience with manufacturing data and performance monitoring systems preferred.
