Job Summary:

The Weight & Research Inspector plays a critical role in protecting revenue, ensuring freight classification accuracy, and maintaining compliance with industry standards. This role involves inspecting shipments, verifying weights and dimensions, identifying misclassified freight, and documenting corrections to support proper billing and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct inspections of shipments on the dock using handheld devices to verify weight, dimensions, and freight classification.
Review Bills of Lading (BOL) and freight descriptions to ensure accuracy and compliance with the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC).
Document and issue classification corrections based on NMFC rules and packaging provisions.
Gather supporting information, including photographs, dimensions, and commodity characteristics, to validate weight and class adjustments.
Upload and maintain records in the company’s imaging and documentation systems for audit and review.
Research commodity classifications using NMFC and other industry resources to ensure proper freight categorization.
Generate reports to track correction activity, revenue recovery, and compliance trends.
Work closely with operations, pricing, and customer service teams to resolve classification discrepancies.
Communicate with customers when necessary to explain corrections and ensure transparency.

Qualifications & Skills:

Minimum Requirements:

2+ years of experience working with transportation weight and research.
Ability to effectively explain and document classification corrections for all involved parties.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and experience using handheld technology for freight inspection.
Strong research skills, including the ability to navigate online classification databases.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work night shifts and flexible hours, including weekends as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of NMFC provisions, including classification rules and packaging standards.
Prior experience in weight and research within the LTL industry.
High school diploma or equivalent.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift and maneuver freight up to 50 lbs. regularly and occasionally more than 75 lbs.
Stand, sit, walk, bend, climb, push, pull, twist, squat, and kneel for extended periods.
Work in a warehouse or dock environment with varying temperatures and conditions.
