DATA OPERATIONS SPECIALIST
Reports to: Manager, Data & Reporting
FLSA Status: Exempt
SUMMARY
As part of the Data Team, the Data Operations Specialist supports the organization by helping ensure accurate, reliable, and well-understood data across key business processes. The position works closely with internal customers to assist with reporting needs, import and validate data, troubleshoot quality issues, and maintain clarity around business terms and metrics. The role also contributes to standard operating procedures and helps guide stakeholders to the appropriate reporting outlets. This position requires strong communication skills, an understanding of business and data systems, and the ability to perform light SQL work and simple report creation in SSRS and Power BI.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Business & Data Process Understanding
- Develop a strong understanding of key business processes.
- Build working knowledge of the data systems, applications, and integrations that support business operations.
- Understand how data flows between systems, where key data elements originate, and how changes may affect reporting and processes.
Data Quality, Troubleshooting & Integration
- Investigate and resolve data quality issues by tracing data through systems, validating assumptions with business partners, and assisting with resolution.
- Refer issues to appropriate technical resources when needed.
- Import data using custom applications/tools, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and successful processing.
- Log data quality issues and resolutions as part of governance practices.
Data Governance & Documentation
- Assist with developing, documenting, and maintaining standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Support governance activities:
- Maintain business term definitions, clear documentation, and metric ownership.
- Help track and organize reports and their usage.
- Identify inconsistencies across reporting.
Reporting, Analytics & Self-Service Enablement
- Understand organizational reporting outlets/platforms and direct customers to the appropriate solution.
- Perform light SQL data pulls for analysis, validation, and business questions.
- Perform light report writing, editing, and maintenance in SSRS and Power BI.
- Build simple Power BI reports and visualizations using existing datasets and defined requirements.
- Use AI tools and chatbots effectively for research, troubleshooting, documentation, and reporting tasks.
Stakeholder Support, Project Intake & Organizational Alignment
- Assess and scope project/report requests by clarifying objectives, timelines, dependencies, and required resources. Escalate when needed.
- Maintain positive working relationships with internal and external customers.
- Serve as a knowledgeable resource for data-related questions, guiding stakeholders to solutions.

QUALIFICATIONS

- 2+ years of experience in data analysis, reporting, business operations, or a related field
- AS/AA or BS/BA in business, data analytics, information systems, or a related discipline (or equivalent work experience)
- Basic understanding of data systems, business processes, and how data flows between applications
- Experience writing and modifying simple SQL queries
- Familiarity with reporting platforms and self-service analytics tools (Power BI preferred)
- Ability to create and maintain simple reports in SSRS and Power BI
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate issues and assist in resolution
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for working effectively with internal and external customers
- Detail-oriented with strong follow-through and time-management skills
- Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work is typically performed in normal office conditions, with the potential for limited remote work.
- Position rarely requires overnight travel.
