Kamehameha School CDL Bus Driver

1. Job Purpose/Objective
This position is responsible for the safe transportation of Kamehameha students to and from school and other sites within designated route(s). This position ensures the reliability of vehicles used in the transportation of students.
2. Essential Job Functions
Incumbent may perform any or all of the following:
- Drives a school transportation vehicle within a prescribe route(s) in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students at designated stops.
- May operate a special ramp bus; loads and unloads students in wheelchairs on and off bus, inspecting wheelchair for operational safety; operates ramp; positions and secures wheelchair in bus.
- Transports students and teacher on field trips to various locations; planning necessary route(s) and stops as needed.
- Maintains order an proper discipline of student passengers according to DOE bus rules and conduct.
- Conduct safety and operational inspection of assigned vehicle daily – Pre and Post trips.
- Reports needed mechanical repairs when necessary.
- Services buses with gas, diesel fuel, and oil; checks tires and batteries.
- Performs periodical safety drills as required by law, completing necessary reports upon request.
- Maintains cleanliness of vehicle to ensure safe operating condition, washes bus weekly.
- Completes periodic mileage and other reports including passenger counts.
- Attends various meetings regarding safety, first aid and training updates as required.
- Operates a two-way radio.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
3. Essential Skills (Minimum qualifications individual must possess when entering position) - i.e. skillsets, education, certifications, etc.:
- High School diploma or GED, or one to three months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum age to drive – 21 years old
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
- Able to write routine reports and correspondence
- Able to speak effectively and communicate on several levels (adults, children, management)
- Able to pass a DOT physical
- Valid driver’s license, clean Hawaii Driver History Record and Criminal Abstract
- Ability to upgrade to CDL
- First Aid, CPR Certified
- Pass DDC (Defensive Driving Course)
- Must meet/adhere to, all requirements of FMCSA, DOT, FTA and DOE as applicable
- Learn and pass test on Title 19
- Able to work flexible shifts – 24/7 availability for Midday and Late runs
- Position requires working under deadlines and/or pressure
- Requires expertise in dealing with people and situations involving complex issues
- Requires compliance with company Substance Abuse Policy and DOT Controlled
- Substances and Alcohol Use and Testing regulation
- Requires communicating effectively orally and in writing
- Speaking with school officials, teachers, company supervisor

4. Working Conditions/ Job Environment:
- Must be able to stand, walk and sit for sustained periods of time
- Medium work- exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
- Stooping, kneeling, climbing, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting for extended periods of time.
- Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately.
- Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.
- The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating and repairing machines/equipment.
- The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.
- The worker is subject to hazards includes a variety of physical conditions such as proximity of moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, exposure to heat.
- Subject to atmospheric conditions: one or more of the following conditions affect the respiratory system of the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists and gases.
- Some remote work may be necessary.
