POSITION PURPOSE
The Field Service Controls Technician is responsible for the field commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, repair, optimization, and field support of BAC control systems and the associated equipment. The position serves as the primary technical resource during site visits to ensure BAC control systems operate safely, efficiently, and according to the BAC design specifications. This role requires a combination of controls, electrical, automation, and HVAC knowledge to support equipment installations, warranty activities, retrofit projects, and to provide onsite technical support for customers. The technician acts as the liaison between contractors, customers, field service personnel, and BAC engineering teams to ensure successful unit deployments and customer satisfaction.
This is a remote, field-based position requiring the employee to reside in Texas. The role provides field service and controls support primarily throughout the Southeastern United States and requires extensive travel to customer and project sites across the region. Travel outside of the assigned region may be required periodically based on business and customer needs.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Installation and Commissioning
- Install, configure, and commission BAC control systems and associated equipment.
- Verify the proper installation and operation of control panels, sensors, electrical components, and building management system (BMS) communications.
- Confirm electrical wiring is installed in accordance with BAC drawings, specifications, and applicable electrical codes.
- Validate sequences of operation and overall system functionality and performance.
- Configure BMS communication settings and assist with establishing network connectivity for control systems.
- Identify and address installation or configuration issues that may impact equipment startup or performance
- Startup and System Validation
- Coordinate equipment startup schedules and activities with customers, contractors, and BAC personnel.
- Conduct field startup activities and provide factory startup assistance as required.
- Verify that BAC equipment operates in accordance with design requirements, sequences of operation, and customer expectations.
- Validate system operating parameters, setpoints, alarms, controls, and safety interlocks.
- Follow established electrical safety practices, including arc flash awareness and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
- Troubleshooting and Repair
- Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical, controls, communications, and equipment performance issues.
- Troubleshoot control panels, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), sensors, and BMS communication networks.
- Perform field repairs and coordinate the replacement of defective components as needed.
- Assist in identifying root causes of equipment and control system issues and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Provide technical support to customers, contractors, and BAC personnel during field service activities.
- Customer training
- Develop positive customer relationships through professional communication, responsiveness, and technical expertise.
- Provide onsite technical guidance and support to customers and contractors.
- Conduct customer and contractor training on system operation, control system navigation, basic troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance.
- Serve as a technical liaison between customers, contractors, field service personnel, and BAC Engineering teams to facilitate timely resolution of field issues.
- Documentation and Reporting
- Complete field service reports, startup documentation, and expense reports accurately and within established timelines.
- Maintain detailed records of system configurations, modifications, repairs, and field activities.
- Document field findings, recommended corrective actions, and lessons learned.
- Provide technical feedback to Engineering and other internal teams to support product quality, reliability, and continuous improvement initiatives.

NATURE AND SCOPE
The Controls Field Service Technician will report to the Controls Support Lead and function as a key member of the BAC Controls Support team. As part of the Controls Support team, the Controls Field Service Technician will interact with regional engineering, product engineering, warranty, quality assurance, and the controls support team. They will be able to provide feedback to Engineering through reports and other established processes. The technician operates independently in the field and must be able to demonstrate technical judgement when diagnosing and making recommendations. This role has no direct supervisory responsibilities; in consultation with the Controls Support Lead, may provide technical advice to contractors and field personnel.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Associate degree in Electrical Technology, Electronics, Mechatronics, HVAC/R Technology, or a related technical discipline required. Equivalent military training or relevant industry experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology or a related discipline preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years of field service, controls/automation, HVAC commissioning, or related technical experience.
- Working knowledge of electrical power systems and motor controls.
- Working knowledge of variable frequency drives (VFDs), including configuration and tuning.
- Knowledge of HVAC/R equipment, control systems, and commissioning practices.
- Working knowledge of building management system (BMS) communication protocols, including BACnet/IP, BACnet MS/TP, Modbus RTU, and Modbus TCP.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
- Understanding of electrical safety practices, including arc flash awareness and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical, controls, communications, and equipment performance issues.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively and work a flexible schedule based on customer and field service needs.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with customers, contractors, and internal teams.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills with the ability to work independently in field environments.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
This position requires extensive domestic travel, typically greater than 50%, primarily throughout the Southeastern United States. This position requires the ability to lift and carry equipment, tools, and materials up to 30 pounds. This position also may require working in varying weather conditions and temperatures. Occasional travel outside of the assigned region, including potential international travel, may be required. A flexible work schedule, including occasional weekends and emergency service support, may also be necessary based on customer and field service needs.
