Job Summary
The Senior Estimator—Transportation is accountable for creating comprehensive cost estimates for transportation projects. This role involves compiling bids, budgets, design-build proposals, and change order proposals that precisely represent projects within Baker Electric's scope. It also requires a thorough understanding of electrical systems in transportation infrastructure and the capability to work closely with project teams, engineers, subcontractors, and clients to produce comprehensive and competitive estimates.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Cost Estimation & Bid Preparation:
- Analyze project plans, specifications, and blueprints to identify electrical requirements and to clearly understand the entire scope of work for the project. Clearly communicate the Project Scope to Senior Management to determine / confirm that the project is a good use of our resources and should be pursued.
- Critically analyze bid documents to identify risks and opportunities, communicating them to Senior Management.
- Prepare detailed and accurate estimates for transportation projects, including material, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs related to electrical and low voltage scopes in the project.
- Lead the preparation of bids for all transportation projects, ensuring all aspects of the electrical scope are properly captured.
- Properly identify equipment quotes and subcontract scopes needed and properly request such from appropriate firms capable of performing the work. Receive, review and analyze all quotes and sub-bids to identify the correct costs to include in our proposal.
- Responsible for the proper review and understanding of all bid-related documents.and the proper execution and completion of all required Bid Forms and Bid Submission documents from owners and or GCs as applicable.
- Organize and manage the bid team, providing leadership and direction on means and methods, schedule, and strategy.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site tours, and post-bid interviews as required.
Risk Management & Cost Analysis
- Identify potential risks and communicate such to Senior Management and develop strategies to mitigate such during the bidding process.
- Conduct cost and profitability analysis of completed projects to refine future estimating methods.
- Assist in gathering actual vs. estimated costs and maintaining project cost history.
Client And Stakeholder Engagement
- Build and maintain effective relationships with customers, design teams, subcontractors, suppliers, vendors, and user groups, reflecting company core values.
- Participate in client negotiations, providing technical expertise and clarifying scope as needed.
- Assist with business development activities.
Research & Industry Knowledge
- Stay current with the latest trends, pricing, transportation infrastructure and electrical systems technologies.
- Conduct special studies to develop and analyze new materials and installation procedures to determine the effect of possible cost reductions.
Collaboration & Team Leadership
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other estimators to ensure alignment with project goals and client expectations.
- Lead the Transportation Estimating Team, providing timely execution of the entire estimate deliverable process.
- Assist in mentoring or training new Estimators.
Vendor & Subcontractor Coordination
- Source and obtain competitive pricing from suppliers and subcontractors for materials and services.
- Maintain and execute sound bidding practices for quotations and subcontractor pricing with minimum 3 bids for each scope when possible.
- Manage and maintain the subcontractor database and subcontractor prequalification process where applicable.
Experience And Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in electrical estimating, with at least 3 years focused on transportation-related projects.
- Proven ability to complete multiple transportation estimates and budgets simultaneously.
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Accubid, McCormick, Bluebeam) and MS Office Suite (Excel, Word).
- Strong understanding of electrical systems relevant to transportation.
- Comprehensive understanding of transportation infrastructure projects, electrical codes, and industry standards.
- Overall understanding of construction business operations, including procurement/buyouts and risk management.
- Strong analytical ability and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in preparing estimates and project documentation.
- Effective time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with clients, vendors, and project teams.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Professional Estimator (CPE)) are a plus.

The starting salary for this opportunity range is listed. Other rewards may include annual bonus eligibility based on company and individual performance, short- and long-term incentives, and program-specific awards.
