We are currently seeking a purpose-driven candidate with an ownership mentality to fill an open position as an Executive Director, Research & Development. This position will be located in Rolla, MO.
Summary
The Executive Director, Research & Development (R&D) will lead the R&D strategy for the company. This role involves overseeing the development of new materials and chemicals for semiconductor production, driving innovation, and ensuring alignment with business objectives. Key responsibilities include setting R&D strategy, managing budgets, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, and fostering a culture of innovation. The role offers an opportunity to shape the future of semiconductor manufacturing while driving technical excellence and business growth.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a core member of the Executive Director team.
- Define and implement the R&D strategy in alignment with the company’s short- and long-term business objectives.
- Drive innovation and platform development, and IP strategy focusing on advanced chemical formulations, semiconductor materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Build and maintain a high-performance R&D team, fostering collaboration, creativity, and cross-functional engagement with other departments such as Product Development, Manufacturing, and Quality Control.
- Oversee the research and development of new materials and chemicals designed to enable new architectures and optimize semiconductor production, focusing on performance, cost, and scalability
- Drive implementation of AI tools to aid material design and discovery and prototyping of new products.
- Collaborate with customers and industry partners and academic institutions identify emerging trends and technological needs in semiconductor manufacturing.
- Direct the development and testing of prototypes and pilot products, ensuring the successful transition from concept to production.
- Evaluate and integrate new technologies and innovations to maintain and enhance the company’s position as a leader in the semiconductor chemicals market.
- Serve as the primary point of contact between the R&D function and other senior leadership teams, ensuring clear communication of R&D progress, challenges, and opportunities.
- Present technical findings, research results, and strategic recommendations to the executive leadership team and key stakeholders.
- Foster strong relationships with external partners, including academic institutions, research organizations, and industry groups.
- Manage the R&D budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources across projects and alignment with company priorities.
- Implement best practices in R&D project management, including timelines, milestones, and performance metrics.
- Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, safety regulations, and environmental requirements in all R&D activities.
- Facilitate the smooth introduction of innovative new technologies to selected markets to promote corporate growth and diversification.
- Develop an intellectual property portfolio that enables the corporation to achieve its business goals and objectives.
- Generate innovative technologies and market opportunities for the company through externally funded exploratory research programs. Oversee the technical work required to accomplish proof of concept and alpha stage development in those program areas.
- Enhance company’s reputation and brand recognition among government entities, customers, and end-users using effective tools, methods, and processes.
- Focus on and provide company leadership, along with the other executive directors, in the planning, development, and execution of organizational strategy globally, and help to set a clear direction for the company.
- Develop and implement the company’s short-term and long-term business plan, along with the other Executive Directors and Corporate Leadership Team, to accomplish key corporate objectives.
- Formulate and administer policies and procedures that have a company-wide impact and/or significant impact on company performance.
- Forecast and submit budget requirements and monitor and report on financial performance against budget.
- Manage employee success by setting clear expectations, providing continuous feedback, supporting professional development, and creating an environment of psychological safety and intentional inclusion.
- Direct, supervise, and coordinate employees and facilities to accomplish the functions and goals of the business unit; plan the use of materials and resources for efficient accomplishment of business unit functions.
- Act as a “connector leader” to ensure the organization’s strategies are connected and not conflicting strategies; this includes the cross functional coordination of company priorities and strategic alignment of resources, including talent.
- Collaborate with other Leadership Team members to position the organization as a global market leader. Analyze competitive opportunities and threats, along with the organization’s strengths and weaknesses, and determine effective strategies for competitive positioning.
Required Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or related field and
- 12+ years of increased responsibilities in R&D or product development and
- 10+ years progressive leadership experience or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Education & Experience
- Master’s degree in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or related field.
- PhD in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or related field.
