This role requires approximately 75% travel and regular field work in outdoor settings, including exposure to varying weather and site conditions.
The Geologist role is tasked with basic foundational work in the fields of geology and hydrogeology. This roleprincipally involves carrying out routine tasks, solving elementary problems, and learning and applying fundamental skills and knowledge in geology, hydrogeology, geochemistry, and geophysics. The role is carried out under the close supervision and guidance of experienced colleagues and supervisors.
Responsibilities
- Assist in field investigations, including water and soil sampling.
- Assist with basic well logging and field data collection tasks in a supervised setting.
- Help in the examination and interpretation of geological, hydrogeological, geophysical, and geochemical data.
- Follow all safety protocols and procedures related to the role.
- Maintain and update data logs of all performed tasks.
- Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.
Skills and Competencies
- Basic understanding of geology, hydrogeology, geophysics, and geochemistry.
- Proficiency in using sampling equipment.
- Basic analytical skills to interpret geological data and information.
- Basic proficiency in using software and tools associated with geological studies.
Experience
- Typically, a minimum of 0-3 years of related work experience in geology and hydrogeology or related field.
Education
- A bachelor’s degree in geology, hydrogeology, or related field, or equivalent experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in using standard computer programs (i.e., MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook); experience with MS Project, MS Access, AutoCad, ArcGIS, and/or boring log software (e.g., BoreDM) a plus.
- Strong desire and be motivated to obtain a Geologist-in-Training certification then Registered Professional Geologist licensure within 3-5 years.
- Capable of working in a team environment and handling multiple tasks with competing priorities.
- Highly organized, reliable, and able to work both independently, and to work well with others
- Self-starter, results-oriented, reliable, and able to work well with a wide variety of coworkers and subcontractors.
- Capability to safely and routinely operate pumps, hand tools, and power tools in a field environment, including the ability to troubleshoot equipment issues as they arise.
- Strong verbal communication and technical writing skills.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to approximately 65-90% with the increased travel during the peak field seasons.
- Willing to do field work for the first few years of employment
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- Ability to wear required safety equipment at sites potentially including air purifying respirators, fire retarded clothing, hard hats, steel toed boots (or other approved toe protection), safety glasses, etc.
- 40-hour HAZWOPER certification and/or MSHA training a plus.
- Ability to work for short periods of time in extreme temperatures including heat and cold.
- Ability to stand for several hours observing and documenting critical drilling and construction operations.
- Ability to operate a BC pickup truck/rental/personal vehicle to commute to jobsites and to access work areas on site.
- Ability to work safely (i.e. alert and vigilant) around construction equipment and be able to walk swiftly for a short distance to exit an area where a potential hazard is identified.
- Ability to climb stairs (2-3 flights) or ladders (up to 24-foot typically) to access structures for visual inspection.
Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.
Location A: $59,000 - $79,000
