Salary Range: $100,000 - $165,000 annually plus bonuses. Salary will be dependent upon experience
Summary: The Deputy Director of Planning is responsible for all aspects of leading the Planning Center of Excellence to include business planning and budgeting, identifying market opportunities and or leading new market offices, leading CRM activities, business development, program and project management, group operations, resource management, and staffing.
Essential Functions:
- Technical Expert in Planning and Urban Design with the ability to self-perform technical work and consult on programs and projects across the country. Ability to grow and/or expand business in your area of technical expertise. AICP certification is required.
- Project and Program Management, including developing overall technical direction and program leadership, scheduling, cost estimating, project management, and client management. Must demonstrate an understanding of project management skills to ensure program success. Assemble project teams; conduct quality control; ensure deliverable quality, monitor schedules, and client satisfaction; and provide senior leadership in communications with regulatory agencies, project stakeholders, and clients.
- Marketing and Business Development, including development and execution of the Planning CoE’s marketing and business plans; recommending new business opportunities and growing client base through reputation, contacts, and networking; leading major proposal efforts and interviews; participating in professional associations and organizations to promote Matrix in the industry.
- Leadership and Development of the Planning Practice, including providing senior-level mentoring and leadership to staff in various offices, supporting senior leaders in the firm with staffing assignments and program and project execution, communicating vision and motivating employees, mentoring junior staff, maximizing group profitability, quality control, and working closely with the Matrix leadership team to communicate group issues. Ability to communicate and manage staff working remotely across the country.
- Corporate Contributions including maximizing corporate profitability, marketing, and representing all services within Matrix Design Group to develop new and existing business across all service lines and contributing to corporate goals.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in urban and regional planning or related planning and landscape architecture field; master’s degree preferred.
- Proven senior leadership experience (15 to 20 years) with a track record of successful project management and operations.
- AICP certification required.
- 15+ years of progressive planning experience with at least 4 years in the private sector.
- Management of a planning group, planning organization, or major ($1,000,000) project or program.
- Business development and marketing experience.
- Experience in the development of proposals and requests for qualifications.
- Extensive knowledge in community, land use, transportation, urban design, military, compatibility, planning policy, redevelopment planning, and general planning.
- Able to travel to project/client sites and other Matrix locations.
- Extensive experience in one or more of the following markets: Phoenix, Denver, San Antonio, Washington DC, Guam, Hawaii or the Pacific Islands, Seattle, Tucson, and Salt Lake City.
- Excellent leadership and management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams).
