Brown and Caldwell is seeking a self-motivated water and wastewater treatment engineer specializing in process mechanical design to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for planning, evaluating, designing, and supporting the construction of process-mechanical systems and facilities for water and wastewater treatment projects. Working as part of our established Municipal Team in Saint Paul, you will contribute to the successful delivery of mid-sized and large infrastructure projects, applying sound engineering judgment to solve complex technical challenges.
The primary focus of this position is serving municipal clients throughout Minnesota and the Upper Midwest, with opportunities to collaborate on projects across Brown and Caldwell's Eastern Region and nationwide. This role offers the chance to work alongside experienced industry leaders, engage directly with clients, and play a key role in delivering innovative and sustainable water solutions that improve communities.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design of complex process-mechanical elements.
- Lead in preparing complex calculations for and selection of piping and equipment as per project requirements.
- Lead the coordination of interdisciplinary teams to develop comprehensive solutions for complex design elements.
- Lead the guidance of BIM professionals for creating accurate and efficient 3D models and contract design documents for complex design elements.
- Lead the review of complex construction phase submittals to ensure adherence to project specifications.
- Lead the response to complex contractor requests for information during the construction phase.
- Lead site observations during the construction phase for complex design elements. Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.

- May provide mentorship, guidance, support, and knowledge-sharing to help less experienced team members develop their skills and grow within their roles.
Skills and Competencies
- Proficient use of word processing and spreadsheet-based software tools.
- Proficient understanding of process mechanical engineering principles and practices.
- Proficient analytical skills in evaluating and designing processes for infrastructure projects.
- Proficient use of process-mechanical software analysis tools.
- Ability to work well with interdisciplinary teams.
- Intermediate understanding of the construction process for environmental infrastructure projects.
Experience
- Typically requires minimum of 5 years of process mechanical engineering or related experience.
- Experience in coordinating with interdisciplinary teams required.
- Experience in solving moderately complex problems.
- Proven record of supporting projects or initiatives with strategic importance.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of process mechanical engineering experience in municipal water and wastewater engineering and consulting preferred.
- Experience designing water and wastewater facilities and preparing construction documents including drawings, P&IDs, specifications, control narratives, technical memoranda, etc. is required.
- Experience closely coordinating with architects and structural, electrical, instrumentation and controls, and building-mechanical engineers to deliver integrated design solutions.
- Experience directing BIM professionals in developing 3D models and construction drawings.
- Experience supporting construction-phase services, including submittal reviews, contractor coordination, site observations, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities.
Education
- A bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental, chemical, or mechanical engineering or related field or equivalent experience is required.
Preferred Education
- B.S. degree in Environmental, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering; M.S. degree preferred.
Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.
Location A: $95,000 - $129,000
