The SARA High Power Electromagnetics Division (HPEM) is looking for a remarkably talented, motivated, and imaginative Technical Writer II to support research and development activities and transition innovative technologies to the DoD, DoE, and their contractors in Colorado Springs, CO. The candidate will have the opportunity to grow and learn with talented engineers, physicists, and technicians on long-standing programs and innovative new programs supporting our growing customer base. Our small group will allow the candidate to experience, contribute, and collaborate in a multidisciplinary nature from conception all the way through to operation.
Candidates must be strong team participants, have excellent communication skills, be resourceful and creative, and willing to contribute to a multidisciplinary and fast-paced engineering environment.
Core Responsibilities:
- Edit, standardize, or make changes to material prepared by other contributing authors and technical personnel (engineers and program leads)
- Create physical media for distribution, such as printed and bound workbooks, 3-ring binders, flyers, memos, brochures and other marketing material
- Interview production and engineering personnel and review historical reports to become familiar with product technologies and production methods
- Meet with engineers, programmers, and project managers to learn about specific new products or processes
- Organize technical content to create narratives that convey information to a wide variety of potential audiences, including both highly technical and non-technical review entities
- Review writing assignments and create information exchange standards regarding proper order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology
- Observe production, developmental, and experimental activities to determine operating procedure and detail
- Copy-edit technical contributions, technical reports, test plans, procedures, and other writing submittals
- Create and maintain organization of writing assignment matrix and ensure that contract deliverable data requirements are submitted in the accordance with the customer’s requested electronic and hard copy formats
- Contribute to the strategic planning, design, and execution of various documentation and communication projects
- Offer expert judgment and innovative solutions to documentation and communication needs
- Collaborate with all other departments and disciplines, ensuring optimal performance and alignment with company and project objectives
- Develop, document, and refine internal processes and standards to enhance the efficiency and quality of the organization’s internal and external communications
- Resolve advanced technical challenges using in-depth knowledge and creative problem-solving skills
- Guide the documentation of projects, ensuring they meet strategic objectives and performance criteria
Key Competencies:
- Ability to present complex data in clear, concise text
- Ability to meet deadlines and to work independently
- Ability to recognize and resolve necessary improvements in documents and documentation processes
- Advanced in the use of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook, and Publisher
- Advanced in the use of Adobe Acrobat and Pro
- Familiar with Soildworks and PDM
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Technical Writing, or related field
- Five to Ten years of related experience
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent use of grammar in regard to technical documentation
- An understanding of basic physics and engineering concepts
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain DoD Top Secret security clearance
- May require light physical effort, involving standing, sitting and use of hands while performing duties, carrying or lifting up to 15 pounds
- Working environment is indoor, moderately quiet, reasonably clean, well-lighted and well-ventilated

- Active DoD Top Secret or DoE Q clearance

Pay Range
Salary at SARA is determined by various factors, including but not limited to location, the individual’s particular combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $75,000 to $95,000 (annualized USD). The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of SARA’s total compensation package for employees. Positions are on-site, unless indicated otherwise.
